The NFT of the future may not be a collectible. It may become an active, verifiable identity-control layer that helps people prove who they are without surrendering every private detail about themselves.
The big problem: living in an “AI-copy” world
Artificial intelligence can already imitate writing styles, clone voices, generate synthetic faces, and produce convincing video. That progress creates a serious trust problem: when a bank, employer, platform, or colleague interacts with someone online, how can either side establish that the person, credential, or piece of media is authentic?
Passwords and static identity numbers were not designed for a world of automated impersonation, large-scale credential theft, and synthetic media. Modern identity requires several separate capabilities: reliable identity proofing, phishing-resistant authentication, privacy-preserving credential exchange, revocation, recovery, and evidence about the origin of digital content.
The latest NIST Digital Identity Guidelines explicitly address identity proofing, authentication, federation, forged media, subscriber-controlled wallets, and the changing fraud environment. The W3C Verifiable Credentials Data Model defines a standards-based way for trusted issuers, holders, and verifiers to exchange tamper-evident claims. Those standards are more credible foundations than treating a public blockchain token as a database of personal information.

Enter the Agentic Non-Fungible Sentinel
Agentic DeFi Labs is researching a concept we call an Agentic Non-Fungible Sentinel, or ANFS. The name describes three design requirements:
Agentic
The system is active rather than static. A policy-bound software agent can receive a request, determine which credential or proof is appropriate, ask for human approval when necessary, and disclose only the minimum information required.
Non-fungible
The identity relationship is unique and cannot be substituted casually for another person’s identity. “Non-fungible” does not mean that raw personal records belong on a public chain. It means that control, provenance, and authorization must remain uniquely bound to the legitimate holder.
Sentinel
The system protects the boundary between a person’s private identity data and the services that request proof. A sentinel should enforce consent, purpose limits, expiration, revocation, and recovery instead of simply releasing a permanent copy of a document.
This is not a cartoon NFT with your passport inside it
A credible identity architecture must separate private credentials from public verification infrastructure. Sensitive information—such as a legal name, date of birth, government identifier, medical record, or bank account—should not be permanently exposed on a public blockchain.
In an ANFS-style model, verified credentials could remain in a protected wallet or private data store. The blockchain layer, where appropriate, could support tamper-evident identifiers, issuer keys, credential status, revocation references, permissions, and provenance. The person’s agent would coordinate access without converting the entire identity into a publicly readable token.
How it could work in everyday life
- Identity proofing: A trusted issuer verifies the person under an appropriate assurance process.
- Credential issuance: The issuer provides a signed digital credential to a wallet controlled by the holder.
- Authentication: The holder uses a phishing-resistant authenticator, such as a passkey or hardware-backed key, to authorize the interaction.
- Policy review: The sentinel evaluates who is asking, what they need, whether the purpose is allowed, and what minimum proof can satisfy the request.
- Selective disclosure: Instead of sending a full identity document, the system can prove a limited fact—for example, that the holder is over a required age or has a valid professional credential.
- Verification: The receiving service checks the issuer’s signature, credential status, and the holder’s authorization.
- Audit and revocation: The system records the authorized event without exposing unnecessary personal data and can revoke or replace compromised credentials.
An AI-generated clone may be able to imitate a face or voice, but imitation alone should not satisfy a cryptographic authentication and credential-verification process. No single token can make impersonation impossible; secure identity requires multiple layers, sound recovery, and clear governance.
Identity and content provenance will converge
Proving who authorized an interaction is only part of the problem. People will also need evidence about who created or changed an image, video, document, or autonomous-agent output. The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity is developing Content Credentials for recording the origin and history of digital media. An agentic identity system could use that evidence when signing, publishing, licensing, or challenging content attributed to a person.
This creates a more useful vision than “NFT equals profile picture.” The non-fungible object becomes a controlled relationship among a human, trusted credentials, cryptographic keys, authorized agents, and verifiable records.
The 20-year vision
Over the next two decades, digital identity may move from organization-controlled accounts toward portable credentials and holder-controlled wallets. An intelligent identity agent could become as ordinary as a password manager, mobile wallet, or driver’s license app—while remaining interoperable with public institutions and regulated services.
Whether the market ultimately calls this an NFT, a digital credential wallet, a personal identity agent, or something else is less important than the operating principles: unique control, privacy, interoperability, proof, revocation, recovery, and human authority.

The principles we believe must govern ANFS development
- Private by design: Do not place raw personally identifiable information on public ledgers.
- Standards-aware: Build around interoperable credentials, authenticators, wallets, and revocation systems.
- Human-controlled: The agent serves the holder and must not become an unaccountable identity gatekeeper.
- Minimal disclosure: Share the smallest proof needed for the stated purpose.
- Recoverable and revocable: Lost devices, compromised keys, and life changes must not permanently lock a person out of their identity.
- Auditable: High-consequence actions need inspectable records and clear accountability.
- No false certainty: Identity technology reduces risk; it does not eliminate fraud, coercion, software failure, or governance abuse.
